By Chris Straw, 30/04/01: Records tumbled in London on Sunday April 22 as Nick Torry (LP 1988-95) put in an oustanding performance in the 21st running of the London Marathon.
OLCC member Nick, running for the National Meningitis Trust, crossed the finishing line having completed 26 miles 385 yards in the astonishing time of 2 hours 58 minutes 21 seconds - unofficially an OLCC record.
Nick's time, only some 51 minutes off the winning mark set by Abdelkader El Mouaziz of Morocco, would not have disgraced most athletes and certainly not one as usually lazy as Nick.
Croydon-based Nick finished the race in 836th position out of some 40,000 runners who entered, which was clearly a tremendous achievement
An exhausted Nick said: "I'm very happy with my time, and that I managed to go under three hours.
"Although for the last three miles I was consistently hit by cramp, I managed to run through it and would consider doing it again some time in the future - the atmosphere and support was amazing."
Nick does not expect to make may appearances for the OLCC this season as he intends to travel after graduation. However all donations to the National Meningitis Trust can be sent to Nick. For further details and the address, please e-mail Nick direct.
