OLCC 'CHALK' UP SECOND WIN
27/06/03: Records tumbled at Leighton Park as the OLCC romped to a convincing 113-run victory over the School.
James Craig took an impressive 4-10 as the school were skittled out for 53, the lowest total ever made by a side against the OLCC.
Jonny Shingles had earlier hit 58 not out to lead the OLs to 166-4 declared from 35 overs.
Skippered for the first time by Jon Dowdell for the first time, the OLCC were put into bat on another humid day and made a brisk start with Dowdell and Tom Gillmor putting on 40 for the first wicket before the latter skied a return catch to Burton and was out for a 31 from 28 balls.
Gillmor's departure slowed the scoring rate and Dowdell soon followed him back to the pavilion, failling victim to a smart piece of stumping by Denselow for a patient eight.
Graham Carter, batting in his 300th innings for the club, made six runs before becoming the third man out and leaving the OL innings in the balance at 60-3.
That brought Shingles to the crease, and together with Phil Samuels he embarked on a fierce counter-attack that was only interrupted by a half-hour break for rain, hitting seven fours and a six on his way to a half-century off 55 balls.
Samuels meanwhile made 24 before missing a straight one, but not before the pair had added 68 for the fourth wicket in just 11 overs.
David Bibby then came in for a cameo 19 not out, and with Shingles progressing to an unbeaten 58 skipper Dowdell was able to declare just before 4.30pm on a score of 166 for four.
After an excellent tea the OLs took the field and were among the wickets straight away as Craig ended a cracking first over by having younger brother Richard caught at extra cover by Gillmor.
It was the start of devastating spell by Craig - making his first appearance for the OLCC in 2003 - and he went on to dismiss Kathoke (bowled for 2), even younger brother Ed (lbw for 10) and Perkin (bowled for a duck) in his six overs.
Matt McNaughton had been bowling a hostile spell at the other end, firing in some testing short deliveries at the LP top order, and finally got the wicket his persistence deserved when he sent back Aylward without scoring to leave the School on 26-5.
The OLCC opening bowlers then gave way to Richard Newell Price and Chris Straw, and it was the former who continued the steady march to victory with the wicket of opener Saker, lbw for five after an admirably defiant innings.
Newell Price then added the wickets of Denselow - also lbw for five - and Field (bowled for one) to claim figures of 3-3 as the hosts lurched to 38-8. A brief rally then followed before Straw (2-8) removed Triddon (bowled for 11) and MacAndrew (excellently caught by McNaughton for nought) to wrap up the innings with the score on 53.
