JOY AT JORDANS
07/06/04: John Crosfield helped the OLCC get back to winning ways by inspiring a nail-biting one-wicket victory at Jordans. Tom Gillmor reports.
Skipper Goof won toss and decided to field on an interesting-looking pitch. Jordans started brightly and put on 50+ for the first wicket, but then the OLCC fightback began with Shingo clean-bowling one opener with a sharp off break and then a long-awaited moment as Arthur took a stunning one-handed catch (100!!) from a rank full-toss from yours truly.
Wickets fell steadily but a middle-order explosion of runs took Jordans past 100 and into a strong position. John Crosfield then took four quick wickets (including a superb running catch from Ed Sugden) and the final wicket fell in the 39th over with the score on 169. OLCC fielding was generally pretty good, although the ball was lost at regular intervals which rather slowed proceedings!
Ackers and Graham opened the batting for the OLCC, but our president fell missing a fullish delivery and Ed Sugden followed soon after. Neale Jackson scored a spirited 20-odd with some good biffing through the off-side, but his dismissal was followed soon after by the wickets of Berridge and Shingles (harshly adjudged LBW).
Ackers and myself then put on 57 and looked in control before I mistimed a drive to mid-off. After another solid partnership between John Crosfield and Hood a few more wickets were lost in quick succession again (including Ackers, finally caught out for 72 after an excellent knock) which brought the last man to the crease (Goof).
The Gov'ner was not to be defeated though and proceeded to secure the man-of-the-natch with a great innings, and a few lusty Samuels blows saw us home in the 38th over. Cracking game.
