HOODY LORDS IT OVER THE INCOGS
09/07/04: The OLCC ended Cricket Week on a high note by notching up a six-wicket win against Incogniti.
Honorary member Ed Carter took three for 11 - his best bowling figures for the OLCC - as the visitors were bowled out for 124, having only eight men present to bat.
Acland-Hood then held the OLCC reply together, compiling a patient 42 not out, and his unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 83 with Paul Newell Price (44 not out) carried the hosts to victory.
After the visitors won the toss and elected to bat, Ed Carter made the breakthrough in the third over when he bowled Whickman (1) with a superb full-length delivery that slanted across the opener.
At the other end, skipper Paul Newell Price was bowling a lively spell and was rewarded for some smart variations in pace when he bowled Wood (14) off the inside edge.
Two more key wickets followed 15 minutes before lunch as Incogniti slipped from 61 for two to 61 for four. First to go was Furness (30), when he miscued an attempted hook off a Neil Dey-Bell full toss and was caught by Acland-Hood at slip, then Howard (6) followed when Richard Newell Price nipped one through his defences.
Barnes (28) and Rodger (28) then held up the OLCC attack with 60 for the fifth wicket but the introduction of Dayalan Doraisamy into the attack ended their partnership, Rodger falling when a towering hit to deep midwicket was superbly held by Ed Carter.
And Carter it was who abruptly wrapped up the innings, coming back on to take two wickets in five balls - Leighton lbw for 0 and Barnes (28) going to a well-judged catch by Richard Newell Price at extra cover.
With no other Incogniti batsmen to appear, the OLs were set 125 to win in what would eventually be around 60 overs - but they made a bad start when Richard Newell Price played on first ball to Leighton.
Fellow opener Doraisamy (14) was next to go, castled when he heaved across the line to end a stand of 23 with Peter Straw (7), who followed Doraisamy back to the pavilion when he was bowled by Rodger after adding 16 with Acland-Hood.
Ed Sugden then succumbed for a second-ball duck but Acland-Hood was joined by Newell Price and the pair's composed batting saw the OLs to a well-deserved victory.
