Elegant, classy, imposing, and really quite tall are just some of the phrases used to describe the man known throughout the OLCC as 'The Giraffe'. Paul is one of the few players in the club who can claim to be a genuine all-rounder, in the sense that he is very good at both batting and bowling, as opposed to not being particularly better at one or the other, a flaw found in most of his team-mates.
Usually bats in the top four and gets a bowl - and rightly so. Once in, he has a liking for wilfully destroying opposition bowling attacks, using his height to get down the pitch and his strength to wallop the ball to all parts. Has made four centuries for the club, one of the most memorable coming in a cup game where he shared the club record stand of 239 with Oliver Ash (and we still lost).
In his prime, Paul bowled with genuine pace and bounce, but even now - when not coming off the full run - can still exert considerable control. At Saumur in 2003, in a 30-over slapathon, he recorded the sensational figures of 6-2-15-6. He could well have had the best figures in the club's history, but saw his seventh wicket disappear through the hands of Tom Gillmor at mid-off and over the boundary for six.
As for his own catching, Tedley will tell you that he's the only player in the club worth putting in the slips. CCS
